The WKU ASTA chapter is entering its second year as a team. We had a very successful and informative first year under the direction of our former president, Josh Bloecher. I can speak for the whole chapter when I say that last year was very beneficial for all of us and we are excited to see what this year has in store. We hosted many events for the music school last year such as an Itinerant Teacher workshop and Instrument repair workshop, both of which brought in outside guests and provided our fellow students with excellent opportunities for growth in their knowledge of these areas. We also owe a great amount of thankfulness to our faculty advisor, Dr. Bill Scott, for making it possible for us to attend the ASTA conference in Atlanta. That was an incredible experience and we cannot express how much it helped us to grow. Everything at that conference left us motivated and excited to start teaching and playing as soon as we arrived home.
This year we started off the semester with a reading session of new music. It was so exciting to see people come in from outside of our area to take part in this. It made us realize that we really can help and encourage others in and outside of our community. This semester our main focus is outreach. Our chapter is very small right now and we feel that it is partly because not many of the other students at WKU know who we are. Or if they have heard of us, they don’t really know what we are about. We have plans to host a Halloween bake sale, provide an opportunity for an ASTA member scholarship which will cover the dues of one new member for a year, and we are now doing a “Symphony Member Highlight” every two weeks. This is where we draw the name of one WKU Symphony member and make an announcement at rehearsal as well as highlight their accomplishments by posting their photo and bio on our bulletin board for two weeks. So far this has been a huge hit and has drawn positive attention to our chapter and to our bulletin board where information about our chapter is located. We also have adjusted our advertising strategies to reach not just the music school but the whole campus. Who knows how many other string enthusiasts might be out there!
